SUMMARY:Virtual Tour: ROXBURY BRANCH of the BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
DESCRIPTION:WMAIA COTE Presents\nA Virtual Tour: ROXBURY BRANCH of the BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY\nA 2022 AIA COTE TOP TEN AWARD WINNER\nThursday\, October 13\, 2022  I 4:30 PM I ZOOM I 1 HSW\nPresented by Michael LeBlanc AIA\, Principal\, Utile \nProgram Description\nUtile worked with the Boston Public Facilities Department and the Boston Public Library to complete the comprehensive renovation of the Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library in Nubian Square\, following a previous entry design and programming study for the building. This project creates a welcoming environment for visitors\, enhances the library’s presence in the Lower Roxbury community\, and fully upgraded the outdated building systems. \nThe 27\,000 square foot renovation includes a revitalized community room with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology\, new lighting\, and large windows overlooking a new entrance and plaza. \nNew programs include a technology teaching lab and a nutrition lab featuring a full kitchen\, and a dedicated African American collection is prominently located just inside the new entrance. Expanded computer stations and laptop availability provide visitors with access to technology throughout the library. \nThe renovation visually opens up the library to the community by replacing much of the concrete and glass block walls with new transparent window walls. The entrance was re-oriented to Dudley Street and the Nubian Square MBTA Station to further engage with the neighborhood\, and overlook a fully redesigned plaza. A raised terrace under a large entry canopy provides shaded outdoor space for reading and accessing the library’s Wi-Fi. \nAdditional building upgrades include new windows\, new insulation\, a new roof\, and modernized HVAC and lighting to significantly reduce the building’s energy consumption and carbon footprint. The library is now fully accessible with a new elevator and enhanced technology for the hearing impaired. \nClick here for more information and to register

The AIA Materials Certificate Program untangles the complexities of that process in five essential courses. The key? Materials transparency. When you know everything you can about the materials you use\, you’re able to make the best product decisions for projects\, people\, and the environment. The courses cover different types of impacts\, and best practices for reducing these impacts\, from industry-best instructors. Take all five courses and earn a certificate! \nREGISTRATION WILL BE FOR ALL 5 COURSES FOR SINGLE FEE\nAIA Members: $50\nNon-members: $100 \nFor more information and to register visit here \nCOURSE 1\nMaterials: The Big Idea \nThursday March 10th 4:30 – 5:45 PM\n1.25 HSWs\nKnow the health and environmental impacts of building products and key drivers for materials transparency in the marketplace. \nCOURSE 2\nEnvironmental Impacts: Making a Difference\nThursday March 24th 4:30 – 5:45 PM\n1.25 HSWs\nUnpack the entire product life cycle. \nCOURSE 3 \nHealth Impacts: Connecting Building Materials\, Human Health\, and the Environment\nThursday April 7th  4:30 – 5:45 PM\n1.25 HSWs\nDiscover the relationship between building materials and human health. \nCOURSE 4\nLife Cycle Assessment: Tools to Reduce the Environmental Impact of Buildings\nThursday April 21st  4:30 – 5:45 PM\n1.25 HSWs\nSimplify the LCA process and better understand its value to architects. \nCOURSE 5\nMaterials & Health: Understanding the Tools\nThursday April 21st  4:30 – 5:45 PM\n1.25 HSWs\nLearn to use the right tools for healthier project and product decisions. \nFor more information and to register visit here \n

SUMMARY:WMAIA Committee on the Environment
DESCRIPTION:Register Now!\nWMAIA COTE – COMMITTEE ON THE ENVIRONMENT – register now for February 24\nThursday\, February | 4:30 PM | Zoom  1 HSW (no fee) \nWhy Trees Are Stronger Than Wood – a presentation by Greg Cabral\, Original Mass Timber Maine \nIn this program\, rescheduled from last fall\, Greg Cabral will discuss the Original Mass Timber Structural Round Timber (SRT)\, which requires no adhesives\, minimal processing\, and can be fabricated using existing local timber supplies\, making it an accessible and early-impact solution for mass timber markets and sustainable forest economies. SRT can compete in both strength and cost with steel and engineered wood products\, with the added benefits of shorter supply chains\, lower embodied energy\, and higher carbon sequestration. Original Mass Timber Maine\, a grant-funded initiative administered by the Town of Ashland\, ME\, has joined forces with influential leaders in the A/E/C community to develop markets for Structural Round Timber (SRT) from regional forest owners to provide cost effective solutions that sequester more carbon\, and require less processing than competitive products\, while providing jobs for local forest economies. Join us to learn more! \nTo register email Lorin Starr for log in information

SUMMARY:Committee on the Environment - COTE Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Register Now\, here\nThursday\, March 18| 4:45 PM | Zoom 1 HSW\n \nWMAIA COTE (Committee on the Environment)  presents:\nNet Zero for Boston City Hall: A Case Study for the Proposed Use of Heat Pumps and Energy Recovery Ventilators for Dramatic Energy Reductions \nIn this presentation\, Bart Bales\, PE\, MSME of Bales Energy Associates focuses on heat pumps and energy recovery ventilators in an interactive presentation that highlights a case study of a proposed transformation of Boston City Hall to a Net-Zero building. This transformation would result in added usable rentable floor area and strongly respect the design of this well-known\, brutalist building. \nIn addition to talking about the proposed Boston City Hall project\, Mr. Bales will share information about how heat pumps and energy recovery ventilators work and how they may be applied in residential\, as well as institutional buildings. Ducted and un-ducted heat pumps will also be addressed and indications of where each is best applied will be described. Examples of residential projects will also be included. \nRegister here
