It’s a time to catch up with colleagues and their work.  The thirteen submissions for this year’s awards will be presented. \nThe winners of the 2022 Design Awards Program will be announced. This awards program was held in conjunction with the Western Massachusetts Section of the Boston Society of Landscape Architects and was juried by colleagues in Virginia. \nThe program will begin with a reception (with cash bar). We will be presenting WMAIA/AIA National/Pella student scholarships and WMAIA’s special honorary membership award. The December meeting is also our chapter’s annual meeting and election of officers. \nWe are especially pleased to be joined by AIA National 2023 President Emily Grandstaff-Rice FAIA\, who will be our keynote speaker. \nA member of the BSA\, Emily  has experience on a broad range of academic\, hospitality\, institutional\, and commercial projects. Her innovative design work reinforces that a building is more than its shell—it is an experience. \nShe has demonstrated continued and significant service to AIA\, including serving as a board member; leading the national equity\, diversity\, and inclusion conversation as chair of the Equity in Architecture Commission and Equity and the Future of Architecture Committee; and serving as the 2014 president of the Boston Society of Architects/AIA. DESCRIPTION:WMAIA COTE Presents\nA Virtual Tour: ROXBURY BRANCH of the BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY\nA 2022 AIA COTE TOP TEN AWARD WINNER\nThursday\, October 13\, 2022  I 4:30 PM I ZOOM I 1 HSW\nPresented by Michael LeBlanc AIA\, Principal\, Utile \nProgram Description\nUtile worked with the Boston Public Facilities Department and the Boston Public Library to complete the comprehensive renovation of the Roxbury Branch of the Boston Public Library in Nubian Square\, following a previous entry design and programming study for the building. This project creates a welcoming environment for visitors\, enhances the library’s presence in the Lower Roxbury community\, and fully upgraded the outdated building systems. \nThe 27\,000 square foot renovation includes a revitalized community room with state-of-the-art audiovisual technology\, new lighting\, and large windows overlooking a new entrance and plaza. \nNew programs include a technology teaching lab and a nutrition lab featuring a full kitchen\, and a dedicated African American collection is prominently located just inside the new entrance. Expanded computer stations and laptop availability provide visitors with access to technology throughout the library. \nThe renovation visually opens up the library to the community by replacing much of the concrete and glass block walls with new transparent window walls. The entrance was re-oriented to Dudley Street and the Nubian Square MBTA Station to further engage with the neighborhood\, and overlook a fully redesigned plaza. A raised terrace under a large entry canopy provides shaded outdoor space for reading and accessing the library’s Wi-Fi. \nAdditional building upgrades include new windows\, new insulation\, a new roof\, and modernized HVAC and lighting to significantly reduce the building’s energy consumption and carbon footprint. The library is now fully accessible with a new elevator and enhanced technology for the hearing impaired. \nClick here for more information and to register

RUBENZAHL STUDENT LEARNING COMMONS\, SPRINGFIELD MA\n1 HSW  \nSponsored by: MARVIN \nCOVID Protocol:This is an in-person tour.  We will adhere to CDC and college guidelines at the time of the event.  Please bring a mask just in case.  The tour will be followed by a reception\, weather and/or Covid protocols permitting.  This program is limited to 50 participants \nProgram Description\nDesigned by Ann Beha Associates the LEED Silver Student Learning Commons at STCC was designed by women-led architect\, landscape architect\, and engineering firms – we are pleased to offer this tour as our 2022 Women in Architecture Program. \nAs the only technical community college in Massachusetts and with an annual enrollment of over 7\,000 students\, Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) offers unparalleled education and career programs. STCC was founded in 1967 and is located on 35 acres within the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. Because the campus is part of a National Historic Landmark and the National Park System\, work on STCC’s historic buildings and campus is subject to review by state and federal agencies\, as well as the National Park Service. Constructed in four phases from 1846 through 1863\, Building 19 originally served as a storehouse for the Springfield National Armory and has been unoccupied for 150 years. ABA’s design for a new Student Learning Commons in the building integrates modern building systems and structural upgrades while maintaining the historic character of the existing building. Programs are consolidated into four major “hubs” for student and academic services. The Student Enrollment and Academic Advising Centers simplify enrollment processes and consolidate access to student services that were previously housed in multiple buildings on campus. The Learning Commons combines the college’s library with instructional spaces\, tutoring\, and information technology services. The Student Life Center animates Building 19 with student life and daily activities\, providing a café\, bookstore\, and meeting areas for students to study and socialize at the new heart of their campus. \nThe Student Learning Commons project received numerous planning\, design\, and preservation awards\, including an AIA New England Citation Award\, a SCUP Excellence in Planning Honor Award\, a SCUP Excellence in Architecture Honorable Mention\, a Robert H. DESCRIPTION:Berkshire Innovation Center Tour\n\n1 HSW  \nCOVID Protocol: This is an in-person tour.  We will adhere to CDC guidelines at the time of the event.  Please bring a mask just in case.  The tour will be followed by a reception\, weather and/or Covid protocols permitting. \nProgram Description\nDesigned by Steffian Bradley (EDM Construction Administration)\, the Berkshire Innovation Center provides a catalyst to accelerate the innovation and growth of existing companies in the Berkshire Region — primarily small to medium sized manufacturing companies (SME’s) in Life Sciences and the Life Sciences Supply Chain — with the ultimate objective of spurring economic growth\, jobs\, and investment in the region. \nWith the approval of over 80 regional stakeholders in the private sector\, government\, and academia\, the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center awarded the City of Pittsfield a $9.7 million capital grant in the May of 2014. The grant was for the development of a 20\,000 square foot innovation center in Pittsfield’s William Stanley Business Park\, the former site of General Electric. The Berkshire Innovation Center\, which officially opened in 2020\, provides regional manufacturers and STEM businesses with advanced R&D equipment\, state-of-the-art lab and training facilities\, and collaboration opportunities with BIC’s renowned research partners\, as well as internship and apprenticeship programs for local students. Operationally\, the BIC is a membership model designed to be self-sustainable and private sector driven. \nTour led by:\nThe tour will be led by Kris Kennedy AIA (formerly of Steffian Bradley) and Tim Eagles (EDM) in addition to representatives from the contractor\, Consigli\, and the BIC. The 174-foot-long bridge span fell about 18.5 feet. SRT can compete in both strength and cost with steel and engineered wood products\, with the added benefits of shorter supply chains\, lower embodied energy\, and higher carbon sequestration. The panel will include Smith College’s Dean of the Libraries Susan Fliss\, Smith College’s Project Manager Charlie Conant along with Janette Blackburn FAIA from Shepley Bullfinch\, executive architect for the building designed by Maya Lin Studio with Bialosky and Partners. The discussion will focus on the College’s vision for a 21st century library and the execution of Maya Lin’s design. Early on\, designer Maya Lin said that in reimagining Neilson she wanted to create a “glowing central hub that revitalizes the center of the campus.” Mission accomplished?

Brian Tibbs is a partner at Moody Nolan\, the largest African American owned firm in the country recently recognized with the 2021 AIA Architecture Firm Award. Brian directs the Nashville office operations where he leads projects across the country including the Music City Center\, the Jacob Javits Convention Center\, and the new Boston Convention Center hotel. \nOctober 07: Sylvia Lavin\, PhD. Sylvia Lavin is a professor of History and Theory of Architecture and the co-director of the Program in Media and Modernity at Princeton University. As an architectural historian and cultural critic\, much of her recent work presents a counter-narrative of post-modern architecture in the United States by addressing the underlying conditions that shaped architectural practice from the post-modern period through the present. As part of the Five College Architectural Theory Seminar\, Sylvia will be speaking on the work of Cedric Price in a lecture titled: A Work on Paper\, a Plantation\, and a Polariser:  An Environmental History of Cedric Price’s Generator. \nOctober 20: Esra Akcan\, PhD. Esra Akcan is the Michael McCarthy Professor in the Department of Architecture at Cornell University. Her research on modern and contemporary architecture and urbanism foregrounds the intertwined histories of Europe and West Asia\, and offers new ways to understand architecture’s role in global\, social and environmental justice. Also part of the Five College Architectural Theory Seminar\, Esra will be speaking about relationships between human rights and architecture in a lecture titled: Human Rights\, Reparations and Architecture. \nNovember 10: Billie Faircloth\, FAIA. As a partner at the innovative and award winning architectural firm KieranTimberlake\, Billie Faircloth leads a diverse\, interdisciplinary teams of professionals that includes architects but also materials scientists\, chemical physicists\, and environmental managers among others. She has played a key role in the research and development of technology for high-performance design including Tally\, an industry standard for life cycle analysis. \nNovember 17: Katherine Williams\, AIA\, NOMA\, LEED AP. Finally\, Katherine Williams is an architect and writer whose experience includes work at traditional architecture firms\, community development\, and managing commercial construction for a general contractor. She currently serves as a Senior Project Manager for construction at a DC University. In addition to professional practice\, Katherine writes about architecture and development and about the experience of African Americans\, and specifically black women architects\, within the field of architecture. She was the NOMA magazine editor from 2009-2014 and recently published Melvin Mitchell’s book African American Architects: Embracing Culture and Building Urban Communities.

The film takes us to the heart of one of the contemporary housing development considered to be a new model of success.  Inhabiting the giant “8 House” built by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels in the suburbs of Copenhagen\, Ila Bêka & Louise Lemoine recount their subjective experience of living inside this experiment of vertical village\, elected in 2011 as World best residential building.  As a Lego game\, the film builds up a collection of life stories all interconnected by their personal relationship to the building. The film draws the lines of a human map which allows the viewer to discover the building through an inner and intimate point of view and questions the architecture’s ability to create collective happiness showing the surprising results of this new type of social model of the 21st century.

DESCRIPTION:GREEN GIANTS NOMINATION\nDue Friday\, October 15th! \nThe GREEN GIANTS award program honors the work of trades people\, educators\, and owners who help build\, teach about\, envision and fund the green buildings in Hampshire\, Hampden\, Franklin\, and Berkshire counties. This program is intentionally distinct from other building design awards in its attempt to honor a wider range of participants behind the sustainable building movement in our region. We choose in this program to call them “Green Giants”. \nNominate someone you’ve worked with who is a Green Giant.  \nNomination is easy – simply click on the category title below in which you’d like to nominate a professional\, or click on the image at right to do the same. \nAwards will be presented at our annual meeting in December! \nNOMINATE\nTRADES PERSON\nAny individual or firm from any building trade\, or a building maintenance professional\, who has gone the extra mile to ensure that a building (or campus) meets its sustainability goals. \nEDUCATOR​\nAny teacher\, administrator\, institution\, or organization behind an innovative green building program that inspires and actively  teaches the design students\, engineers\, trades people\, and citizens who will in their turn advance our green building revolution. \nOWNER \nAny owner or institution that has envisioned and funded an exemplary green project initiated after January 2014\, or currently underway.
