DESCRIPTION:Register Now! \nWednesday October 8| 4:00-5:30PM| ZOOM |1.5 HSW (approval pending)\nWMAIA COTE PRESENTS: Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) – Impact\, Opportunities and Constraints  \nAs the demand for housing far outpaces its construction\, creative solutions at all levels are necessary to narrow the gap. ADUs can be an extra source of income for homeowners\, an affordable entry into a community for a renter\, and a viable opportunity for senior homeowners to age in place with a caretaker or family member. While ADUs exist all over the country\, most have not been considered legal until municipalities recently started to change zoning codes while seeking ways to get involved in supporting these living arrangements. \nADUs can play a significant role in addressing the state’s housing crisis. The Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities (EOHLC) estimates that 8\,000-10\,000 ADUs can be built in the next 5 years as a result of the new state law that allows ADUs to be built across Massachusetts. The law states that ADUs less than 900 square feet can now be built by-right in single-family zoning districts statewide\, as outlined in the Affordable Homes Act\, which was signed into law in August 2024. \nThis program looks at the opportunities and potential impact of ADUs in Western Massachusetts.  Panel Discussion followed by Open Discussion and Q &A \nADU Rules in Regulations – Massachusetts and neighboring states\nTim O’Reilly\, Backyard ADUs\nBackyard ADUs has done extensive work across New England to tackle the housing crisis. Through permitting and building 100+ homes they have extensive experience navigating the regulator environment and understand the real-world barrier to ADU construction. With the passing of the AHA\, it has been a fast-paced year of change across the Commonwealth. Tim is excited to break down what those changes entail\, how they are playing out in our communities\, and\, based on other ADU trends\, what the future might hold for us here in MA. \nBuilding Architect-Designed ADUs – Opportunities and Constraints\nSeth Lawrence-Slavas\, Wright Builders\nADUs are susceptible to the same project dynamics as a single family home\, they have kitchens and bathrooms\, bedrooms and living spaces\, heating and cooling\, plumbing\, utilities\, and on and on…..We will explore three different case studies and discuss how client goals and budgets played key roles in the development of design\, specifications\, and construction means and methods. \nPotential Impact: Regulations and Theoretical Buildout\nProf. Rob Williams AIA and Prof. Ray K Mann AIA\nRob and Ray are engaged in an on-going project looking at barriers to ADU development with a specific focus on the evolving regulatory and zoning conditions. They conducted a series of GIS based analyses of Amherst to better understand the implications of existing and proposing ADU zoning regulations on the potential for ADU development. They used this to develop a series of recommendations for revisions to zoning that would allow for greater development of ADUs. Green building practices\, sustainable operating plans and native species landscaping are all incorporated to meet the goal of a truly sustainable project. \nDesigned by VERMONT INTEGRATED ARCHITECTURE\, PC/MACLAY STUDIO using net-zero principles\, the Outdoor Center will generate all the energy it uses through solar power. This is possible because the building itself will be designed from the ground up for energy efficiency. It will make full use of high-efficiency heat pumps for heating and cooling\, LED lighting\, high R-value insulation and other efficient building systems. Zero carbon\, renewable solar power will be generated by roof panels and/or “carport” panels in the Outdoor Center parking area \nThe Outdoor Center will expand the local and regional economy by establishing Adams as a destination for outdoor recreation and environmental education. The resort will expand visitor services and attractions in the region and connect the Town more meaningfully to surrounding cultural institutions. For years\, low-income tenants in Hartford put up with persistent rodent problems\, water leaks\, mold\, and even collapsed ceilings. Upon organizing into the No More Slumlords campaign\, they discovered that what they thought were problems caused by a single landlord with bad intentions were actually the side effects of a lucrative business model through which wealthy landlords around the country exploit low-income renters—the vast majority of them Black and Brown—for profit. Facing a Slumlord traces the years-long fight by these tenant-activists to not only hold the slumlord who had exploited them accountable\, but also to change the systems at the municipal\, state\, and federal level that had allowed for such exploitation. That fight started in the city of Hartford but reached all the way up to the federal government. \nRegister Now!

The presenters will provide an overview of a historic $97M project that will renovate to the campus’s main academic building – the Liberal Arts or LARTS building – with updated classrooms\, student support spaces\, and other communal learning areas to give the Commonwealth’s students the educational facility they need to achieve educational\, professional\, and personal success. Upgrades to the facility include universal access improvements\, adding air conditioning\, energy efficiency upgrades like new exterior windows\, roof\, HVAC\, and lighting systems\, all within a historically significant and formally expressive concrete building. Du Bois Library (designed by Edward Durell Stone) is currently the third tallest library in the world. Renovations in mid-20th century buildings preset multiple challenges including limited space for MEP and fire protection systems\, aging\, outdated and often failing systems\, structural limitations\, building envelope issues\, hazardous materials abatement\, accessibility concerns\, and construction that is often difficult to adapt to the current occupants’ space requirements. Additionally\, changes in building code requirements may mean that renovation projects often must confront complex code compliance issues. The Du Bois Library presents all of the above challenges and more. The 6th and 7th floor renovation project\, completed by Kuhn Riddle Architects & Designers involved the conversion of a graduate student study floor and an existing stack floor to offices and facilities for the Universities IDEAS (Instructional Design\, Engagement\, and Support) and CTL (Center for Teaching and Learning) programs\, renovation to the existing Digital Scholarship offices on the 6th floor\, and offices for IT support staff. The IDEAS and CTL programs rely heavily on technology to assist facility with both in-classroom and on-line teaching methodologies. Her expertise ranges from complicated renovations to new construction projects with challenging programmatic requirements. Mimi led a master plan for Belmont Day School\, and oversaw the recent construction of “The Barn\,” a 24\,000 square foot building that houses specialty classrooms to support their STEAM program and a Field House. She managed campus master plans for two independent schools; St. Andrew’s School in Austin\, TX and The Park School in Brookline\, MA. She also served as a consultant to Reed Hilderbrand for the Cranbrook Educational Community Master Plan in Bloomfield Hills\, MI. Mimi led an urban campus master plan for a global search engine company based in Kendall Square in Cambridge\, MA that will eventually occupy a half million square feet of office space. Several phases of the expansion have been completed. She was the design principal for Autodesk’s office expansion at The Innovation and Design Building in Boston’s Seaport District and was one of the Utile principals who led the Rethink City Hall project for the City of Boston. She completed the redesign of the Boston City Hall lobby as well as other pilot projects throughout the building. Prior to joining Utile\, Mimi was an Associate at Machado Silvetti in Boston where she was the lead designer for the renovation projects at the Getty Villa in Malibu\, CA. Mimi co-authored Color Space Style\, a reference book on interior design for Rockport Publications. She has recently been appointed as a Commissioner for the Boston Civic Design Commission (BCDC). \nJoseph Zeal-Henry is a designer\, urbanist and curator whose practice advocates for a more equitable built environment through policy and cultural production. His unique multi-disciplinary practice bridges public service and art.\nHe has written for Dezeen\, Casabella\, and Architectural Review. In addition to his role with the Greater London Authority’s Culture Team\, he is a cofounder of Sound Advice\, an ‘extra-institutional’ platform exploring new forms of spatial practice through music. In 2022\, the British Council selected Joseph to co-curate the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2023 alongside Jayden Ali\, Meneesha Kellay and Sumitra Upham. Their pavilion\, Dancing Before the Moon\, explores the need for architecture to look beyond buildings and economic structures and toward everyday social practices\, customs\, and traditions to meaningfully reflect how people use and occupy space. \nJoseph works for the mayor of London in the Culture and Creative Industries Unit\, delivering new cultural infrastructure for the city. He works on the New London Museum\, East Bank\, and the Thames Estuary Production Corridor. He cofounded the social enterprise platform Sound Advice alongside Pooja Agrawal to explore new forms of spatial practice through music. In 2020 they published the book NOW YOU KNOW. He is a trustee of UD Music\, a charity that empowers and harnesses opportunities for young people through Black music culture. \nAlan Organschi is a principal and partner at Gray Organschi Architecture\, an architectural practice in New Haven\, Connecticut recognized internationally for its integration of design\, construction\, and environmental research. He is also the founder of the fabrication workshop and construction management firm JIG Design Build which in 2018 created the Ecological Living Module\, a fully self-sustaining micro house for the United Nations Environment Program. \nIn April 2021\, Mr. Organschi was appointed Director of the Innovation Lab at the Bauhaus der Erde (Earth Bauhaus – www.bauhausdererde.org) a global interdisciplinary initiative that seeks to transform the building sector from a major source of anthropogenic environmental and social impact into a regenerative and ecologically sensitive means to meet the housing and infrastructural needs of an urbanizing global population. In that capacity\, he will direct the development of the Lab\, its experimental projects\, public programs and trans-sectoral collaborations with global partners. \nMr. Organschi continues as a Senior member of the faculty at the Yale School of Architecture where he has taught architectural design and building technology for two decades. During the 2019 and 2020 academic years\, he also served as the Portman Critic at the Georgia Institute of Technology School of Architecture. The findings of the research and design work of the studios he conducted were published in the two-volume collection entitled Technosphere/Biosphere. \nHis ongoing research project\, the Timber City Initiative (www.timbercity.org)\, examines the application of emerging structural wood fiber technologies to the construction of global cities. Timber City has been awarded grants from the Hines Fund for Advanced Sustainability Research in Architecture\, the US Forest Service Wood Innovation Grant program and the SITRA Finland innovation Fund for the Circular Economy. Mr. Organschi has written and lectured extensively on the carbon storage benefits of biogenic material substitution in urban building and is a co-author of the upcoming book Carbon: A Field Manual For Building Designers and the scientific paper “Buildings as a Global Carbon Sink” published in the journal Nature Sustainability in January 2020. That same year\, the paper received the Aquila Capital Transformation Award which honors scientific research that contributes to the decarbonization of Europe. \nIn addition to features in numerous publications\, Gray Organschi Architecture was recognized by the Architectural League of New York as an Emerging Voice in Architecture and has received American Architecture Awards for the Storage Barn in Washington\, CT\, the Common Ground High School in New Haven\, and the Ecological Living Module at the United Nations General Assembly in Manhattan. In 2012\, Mr. Organschi and his partner Elizabeth Gray were honored for their work with an Arts and Letters Award in Architecture by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. \nKatie Faulkner\, FAIA\, LEED AP has been working for twenty-five years on spaces and buildings for education\, working\, living\, and healthcare. She received her MArch from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and an MBA from Boston University.\nBefore West Work\, Katie was a Vice President of Design for Katerra\, focusing on a mid-rise mass timber housing prototype. She was a founding partner of the firm NADAAA\, recognized with notable awards\, including the 2014 Holcim Award\, an AIA COTE Award\, and numerous other accolades. Before NADAAA\, Katie was an Associate Principal at Shepley Bulfinch. In 2017 she received the BSA’s Women in Design Award. In 2020 she was named to the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows.

The homes were designed by architect Andrew Geller at industrial designer Raymond Loewy’s office and were sold through Macy’s Department Store. They came fully furnished\, down to the toothbrush. A kitschy cold war architecture story. \nWednesday April 3 | 6:30 PM | Zoom |1 LU\nNew England Modernism: Revolutionary Architecture in the 20th Century\nThe United States saw a revolution in popular architectural style between the 1930s and 1970s. American Modernism\, originally influenced by the work of European masters including Le Corbusier and Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius\, began to establish footing in New England in early 1930-32. 32 in part with the construction of the Field House in New Hartford\, Connecticut by William Lescaze and the Ralph-Barbarin House in the city of Stamford\, designed by Le Corbusier protégé Albert Frey. By the 1940s\, the region was a hotbed of modernism\, led by a group of architects known as the “Harvard Five” who settled in New Canaan\, Connecticut and included Marcel Breuer\, Landis Gores\, John Johansen\, Philip Johnson and Eliot Noyes. Other architects who designed notable mid- century modern structures in New England included Victor Christ-Janer\, Andrew Geller\, Alan Goldberg\, Carl Koch\, John Black Lee\, Hugh Smallen and Edward Durell Stone. The work produced by this pool of talent had international and permanent influence. The story of New England Modernism is one of imagination\, creativity and industriousness. \nWednesday April 17 | 6:30 PM | Zoom |1 LU\nTHE BEST PLANNED CITY IN THE WORLD: Olmsted\, Vaux\, and the Buffalo Park System\nCOMMUNITY BY DESIGN: The Olmsted Firm and the Development of Brookline\, Massachusetts\nTHE BEST PLANNED CITY IN THE WORLD This film explores the development of the nation’s first park system\, designed for Buffalo by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1868. Drawing national and international attention\, their scheme carefully augmented the city’s original plan with urban features inspired by Second Empire Paris\, including the first system of “parkways” to grace an American city. Displaying the plan at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia\, Olmsted declared Buffalo “the best planned city\, as to its streets\, public places\, and grounds\, in the United States\, if not in the world.” \nOlmsted and Vaux dissolved their historic partnership in 1872\, but Olmsted continued his association with the Queen City of the Lakes\, designing additional parks and laying out important sites within the growing metropolis. When Niagara Falls was threatened by industrial development\, he led a campaign to protect the site and\, in 1885\, succeeded in persuading New York to create the Niagara Reservation\, the present Niagara Falls State Park. Two years later\, Olmsted and Vaux teamed up again\, this time to create a plan for the area around the Falls\, a project the two grand masters regarded as “the most difficult problem in landscape architecture to do justice to. \nCOMMUNITY BY DESIGN In 1883\, Frederick Law Olmsted deserted New York City for Brookline\, which had anointed itself the “richest town in the world.” Over the next half century\, he and his successor firm became the dominant force in the planned development of this community. This film tells the story of the development of the wealthy Boston suburb through the planning initiatives of the firm. From Fairsted\, the Olmsteds’ Brookline home and office\, the office collaborated with an impressive galaxy of neighbors which included the architect H. H. Richardson and the horticulturalist Charles Sprague Sargent. \nThrough plans for boulevards and parkways\, residential subdivisions\, institutional grounds\, and private gardens\, the firm carefully guided the development of the town\, as they designed cities and suburbs across America. We will be presenting WMAIA/AIA National/Pella student scholarships. The December meeting is also our chapter’s annual meeting and election of officers. \nThe highlight of the evening will be a special Green Giants presentation recognizing Laura Fitch AIA\, a beloved colleague who passed away unexpectedly in early 2023. Laura was a founder of the Green Giants program. Since 2013\, the Green Giants Award Program (sponsored by the WMAIA COTE) has been honoring the work of trades people\, educators\, and owners/program directors who help build\, teach about\, envision and fund the green buildings in Hampshire\, Hampden\, Franklin\, and Berkshire counties. \nBONUS — arrive early (4:30 PM) and tour the Bromery Center for the Arts Bridge Renovation (1 HSW\, approval pending). \nCompleted in 1975\, Kevin Roche’s landmark project is an uncompromisingly modernist\, monolithic concrete facility\, consisting of several distinctly different units that in combination form a powerful architectural sculpture. The complex is home to the Music\, Theater\, Dance and Arts departments as well as a Museum of Contemporary Arts and the 2\,000 seat concert hall of the Fine Arts Center. The 26\,000 gsf Art Bridge – a 600-foot long and 40-foot wide bar of classrooms suspended 30 feet in the air – was redesigned by DesignLab to accommodate a wide range of fine arts uses\, from traditional drawings studios\, to a theater rehearsal space\, to a state-of-the-art cross-disciplinary recording studio. \nThe tour of the new facility will show the reorganization of interior space and explore strategies for adaptation to modern uses\, improved lighting\, wayfinding\, collaboration and social spaces\, and outline upgrades to the roof and HVAC systems. WOMEN\, GENDER\, AND ARCHITECTURE IN DENMARK for a panel discussion based on their book\, which tells a new story about twentieth-century architecture in Denmark. For the first time ever\, readers get an overall picture of the key contribution made by women to the architecture of Danish welfare society in the period 1930–1980. The book’s five chapters present hitherto untold stories about how architecture comes into being through creative collaborations that cut across genders and professional disciplines. Women have contributed to all aspects of architecture\, from kitchens and buildings to landscape architecture and urban planning\, and their stories highlight the hidden diversity that has shaped Denmark’s buildings\, cities and landscapes.
